Me + spouse vs family pricing

On the exchange, every person is priced by age, but only the three oldest children under 21 are charged. A fourth or fifth child adds nothing.

Private plans price each person individually, and each person may answer health questions.

    • Compare couple-only and family rates side by side
    • Check whether kids can be on a separate plan for less
    • Ask how a newborn is added mid-year

    Kids' dental and vision

ACA plans must offer pediatric dental and vision, though dental is often sold as a separate plan.

Many private medical plans don't include either. Budget for a stand-alone dental and vision plan if you need one.

    Maternity: the honest answer

ACA plans must cover pregnancy and childbirth. Most underwritten private plans do not cover maternity the way ACA plans must.

If you're expecting, or planning a pregnancy in the next year, an ACA plan is usually the right choice for the family.

Expecting families should usually stay on an ACA plan. We'll tell you if that's the better route.

When private plans can work for families

Healthy families with no plans for a baby, and income over the subsidy line, sometimes pay less with a private plan.

A national PPO network can also help families with a child at college or a parent who travels.

Private underwritten plans are not ACA plans. They ask health questions, and a carrier may decline your application or exclude pre-existing conditions.

    Networks matter more with kids

Make sure your pediatrician, nearest children's hospital and any specialists are in network before you apply.

HMO and EPO plans may limit you to one system. PPOs give more choice, at a cost.

    Mixing plans in one household

Families don't have to be on one plan. A parent with health conditions might stay on the ACA while the others use a private plan — or the reverse.

Children may qualify for CHIP if household income is low enough.

A family checklist before you apply

With this list, an advisor can compare ACA, private and split-household options in one conversation, and tell you honestly which route protects your family best.

    • List every family member's doctors, specialists and prescriptions
    • Note anyone with an ongoing condition or planned treatment
    • Decide whether a baby is possible in the next year
    • Check pediatric dental and vision needs
    • Estimate 2027 household income for subsidy purposes

    How BeneHub helps families

A licensed advisor looks at every person in your household, not just the plan as a whole. We check each family member's doctors and prescriptions, and we'll tell you plainly if a pregnancy or health condition means the ACA is the safer route.

There's no fee to you. Carriers pay us a commission, and your premium is the same whether you use us or not.

    Who this is NOT for

    • Families expecting a baby or planning one soon — choose the ACA
    • Households where anyone has serious ongoing conditions and needs guaranteed acceptance
    • Families whose income qualifies the kids for Medicaid or CHIP
    • Anyone who can join an affordable employer family plan
